Curious Worldview Weekender #3

+ a bit of geopolitics...

Curious Worldview Podcast

A charismatic mix of cerebral thinking with straight talking

Tim Marshall

This has stood out to me…

Every man and his dog’s got a geopolitical opinion (including yours truly), but very few have actually got the chops to contribute something informed and interesting.

Between Niall Ferguson, H.R. McMaster, John Cochrane and Stephen Kotkin you’ve got at attention about 50 authored books, centuries of historical knowledge, and above all… four blokes dripping with skin in the game.

I am highlighting their most recent episode here, but subscribe to the show, because in my opinion, this type of show fulfils the promise of podcasting.

The promise of conversations that would otherwise only be available to those academics/elites in attendance, and never available to consume for the rest of us.

This is what I want you to engage with most…

Contrary to popular opinion, it was not the real life Lachlan Murdoch, Kendall Roy who who has succeeded to the throne, but his cynical apolitical bother, Roman.

This is according to the biographer of Lachlan Murdoch, the guest on this episode of the podcast Paddy Manning. According to Paddy, Rupert’s eldest son, Lachlan, has more in common with Roman Roy than the true ‘I am the oldest boy’ Kendall. Roman and Lachlan share a cynical view of politics where right or wrong or left or right isn’t important, rather winning at business is all that matters.

This is a line from the podcast…

‘For Rupert, power was always more important than business. He would make decisions motivated by what would give him the most power (sounds a big like Logan anybody?) whereas Lachlan (Roman Roy) is primarily motivated by the business outcome. What get’s more ratings. What generates more revenue. Lachlan is less interested in power than he is with business success.‘

Jump into the conversation (time stamps navigation) straight to Paddy’s explanation for why he thinks Lachlan Murdoch is Roman Roy.

This podcast is as well couched in Lachlan’s amazing life, brilliantly captured by Paddy Manning.

This is a photo worth saving…

This photo was taken by Will Fortescue… a master of communicating mood.

Will’s photos are going to feature plenty in the #Weekender editions going forward. He’s undoubtedly one of my favourite photographers.
